A Notary Public’s seal on a document indicates that the document has been notarized; but what does that really mean and why is it needed?

A notary public is a commissioned representative of a state government and is charged with verifying your identity as the signer, confirming that you sign under your own free will, and witnessing the signing event. After confirming the signer’s identity and witnessing a signing (and administering an oath if required for that particular document), a notary public applies his or her own details to the document, such as their signature, seal, and notary commission details.

Notarize is a software service that allows clients to appear before a notary and complete the notarization process remotely and entirely online without having to visit a notary in person.

A traditional paper-based notarization requires an individual signer to physically appear before a commissioned notary public where they must demonstrate proof of identity, sign a document, and potentially swear or affirm the truth of statements in a document (if required for the particular document). Remote electronic notarizations are similar, but allow the signer to appear before the notary by means of a live audio-video conference.   The signer and the commissioned notary use digital tools to sign and complete their respective portions of the document. The notary will witness as the signer signs the document. An electronic version of a notary stamp and a digital certificate will be attached to the document.  The video is recorded and stored as a permanent record to verify the transaction.  When complete, the signer may share the notarized document via electronic means or by printing it.
